What Is Sin?

What Is Sin?

This is an important question. Not just because most people have absolutely no idea what SIN really is, but because it is the ONE thing that is keeping people from truly living their life.

For the wages of sin is death… (Romans‬ ‭6‬:‭23‬ KJV)

This means when you SIN you are rewarded with DEATH (carnal suffering). The “death” we are discussing here is not physical death, although many do experience that as well when they are ruled by the SIN (false belief/foolish thought) that their life is not worth anything.

You see, SIN is a big problem today. Mainly because most have no idea they are sinful… (Full of the wrong thoughts)

I want point out early, to be sinful does NOT always mean people are bad, or have done bad things, many times it means people just don’t know any better.

Of course there are others who do know better and do what is incorrect, or underhanded and improper anyway, regardless the wages are the same.

When you think the wrong thought, or choose the wrong path, your reward will always be less than satisfying. The reason is when anything is done the wrong way it is doomed to fail because the correct way is the only way that truly exists.

Now I can come right out and tell you the word “SIN” simply means to operate outside of what is correct, proper, truthful.

The word SIN itself literally means to miss the Mark.

Think of shooting an arrow at the bullseye on a target and missing the target completely. That is sin.

When you SIN you are missing the point (target) completely.

Proverbs puts it beautifully and simply…

The thought of foolishness is sin… (Proverbs‬ ‭24‬:‭9‬ KJV)

Think about that. Being ignorant is sinful. Not knowing the truth is sinful. Believing a lie is sinful. Being foolish is sinful.

Once again, society has mistaken the word SIN to somehow describe a wicked evil person. However, it simply means, many times, a person who is sinful just does not know any better.

Of course, not knowing any better can lead to greater sins which in many cases are downright evil.

As is the case for the suicide bomber who was convinced, after years of suffering terrible loses due to war and greed, that he would be rewarded for killing the infidel, who in reality is just like him.

The SIN is not just the act of murder, the SIN is also the belief that we are better than others, that we can somehow force people to see things the way we do…

The SIN is believing in a god that would reward murder with paradise.

And the wages of that sin was death indeed.

However, I like to explain SIN another way.

Think of it in terms of riding a bike. SIN would be falling over while trying to ride because you haven’t found your BALANCE yet.

To SIN is not doing something terribly unjust it is simply not doing something the right way.

There is a right way and a wrong way to do things and the right way will always be easier and will produce better results. The wrong way (the sinful way) will always frustrate you, takes more effort, and benefits no one in the long run.

This, my friends, is why we must address the SIN in our life today.

We must look at all those areas in our life where we are experiencing frustration, anxiety, fear, pride, and more and find the root cause of it all.

Every problem in your life is a direct result of the SIN (wrong thinking) in your life.

You have a bad relationship? Do you have trouble at work, feel unfulfilled, hate your life, or hate your neighbor?
Do you feel out of control or feel like you never get ahead? Are you worried your life is going nowhere? Don’t care about others? Don’t care about yourself? Guess what? It’s all SIN related.

All of our trouble in life stems from our ignorance within.

And whether you want to believe it or not, we ALL took upon ourselves the SINS of the world the moment we began to believe what we were taught and told by the very people we trusted in the world. From our parents, to our peers, to political and religious leaders.

SIN (foolish thinking) is handed down from generation to generation, until the cycle is broken by one who lays down his sinful life for the good of others. And this my friend is what we all must do today if we are ever to be free.

Let me first address what scripture teaches us about SIN. I will open up some of these passages and provide additional insight to further you along your journey to life everlasting.

Let’s begin with this verse below.

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (‭1 John‬ ‭3‬:‭4‬ KJV)

So SIN is a transgression of the LAW of God. A lot of people mix the meaning of this up. They think in terms of breaking man made laws like theft or vandalism. However, the LAW of GOD is a constant. It is a LAW much like gravity.

Many confuse the LAW of God to mean a list of dos and donts recorded by Moses, but we know this not the case. The LAW of GOD is ONE THING and it is LOVE.

Jesus made it clear in the gospels, that the LAW of God was to LOVE.

When the disciple asked what was the most important Law. Jesus answered in a way that contained all of God’s Law.

Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt LOVE the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself.

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (‭Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭36-40‬ KJV)

Everything that IS God’s law is contained in the word LOVE!

So when we SIN we are transgressing LOVE. And that means we are directly opposing it.

To transgress something means to go against it. Which makes you an adversary to Love and my friend God IS Love, and since everything exists IN God that means SIN is the operation of that which is false.

To SIN is to follow after a LIE.

If you are not LOVING you are SINNING it is as simple as that.

Now let’s define what LOVE is according to scripture using a beautiful passage from 1 Corinthians 13. And let us break it down line by line.

1) Love is patient...

When you are patient everything goes according to plan, you accept things as they are, and you have peace without the need of an actual timeline. You are content with how things are in the here and now and understand that everything is made beautiful in “ITS” time, not the time you have sinfully decide things should happen in.

When you are not patient, you will suffer. Nothing is ever good enough, and you will never be content with how things are in the moment.

As you can see, the wages of impatience is death (carnal suffering)

2) Love is kind

When you LOVE others it is because you know what you do to them you actually do to yourself. To lift others up and to simply be kind all the time will always produce LiFE. When you are KIND it doesn’t matter if others are not, in fact when you are kind you will find even those who are not will treat you better than before. You are not KIND to get something in return, when you are Kind it is simply who you are. And I believe you understand that if you ARE kind it is because you are in a good place emotionally as well as spiritually. And when you are in a good place you have a joy-filled life.

However, if you are cruel it is usually because of the SIN (ignorance) in your heart. Cruelty produces more cruelty. The wages of cruelty is a life lived in misery indeed.

3) It does not envy…

If you envy others than YOU are not content in your life. This is a great SIN, and many are a victim to it. However, when you are content with your life and instead of looking at what you lack you dwell on all you are blessed with your joy will overflow. The wages of envy is death indeed, for you will always live your life miserably. Those who envy are blind to all they have. They are ignorant.

However, when you stop looking outside for more and you no longer ignore the beautiful life you have been blessed with, your life becomes livable once again.

5) Love does not boast…

When a person boasts it is often the result of insecurity and fear. A person who boasts needs outward approval. They are not content with life as it is. They demand that others recognize their value because they follow after the “SIN” (foolish thought) that they are not. The wages of boasting is death as well, whereas the person who needs not the approval of others is a man who is slave to no one.

6) Love is not proud…

To think you know it all is to learn nothing at all. The proud will never inherit a peaceful life because they are unwilling to compromise, to change or to admit when they are wrong.

The branch that will not bend eventually snaps in two. And so will the proud who will also find the wages of such a mindset to be death as well.

However, the humble always consider others before themselves, they always find ways to mend fences, to bridge gaps, because they understand they are no better than those around them.

The proud can never learn and that is why in anger they often burn, while the humble don’t need things to go “their way” to be okay, they live their life with acceptance and because of it they avoid the strife the proud contend with.

7) It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

The expression, “Do unto others as you would like others to do unto you”, has never been more appropriate. Our lives are intrinsically intwined with the lives of everyone else around us. This is LIFE!

If we all lives this way the world would be a very different place and we all would be much, much happier.

However, when people are focused on putting others down, or doing whatever they can to get ahead, snapping every time something does not go their way, or keep track of everything others have done to us… Well the wages of such a way of life is death indeed. What a miserable life it is for those who act this way. Never happy with others, always angry and selfish and constantly counting the way they have been wronged as opposed to seeing how truly sinful (ignorant) they have been for living this way.

8) Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

Love is not just caring for others it is caring for the TRUTH. When you love you take no pleasure in anything but truth. Because the TRUTH is LOVE, it is peaceful collaboration, it is unity, liberty, and freedom… And it never fails…

9) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

After reading this last line, you tell me if living this way does not sound like LIVING THE RIGHT WAY?

To put others before yourself, to never fear another, to always have a reason to smile and be excited about the future, to always rise to the occasion to not only overcome every obstacle but to have the knowledge of such.

Yes, my friends that is LIVING!

And when we operate in LOVE, and by love I mean … When we are patient, kind, not self serving, not easily angered, no envious or proud, when we no longer dwell on the faults of others, or try to bend others to our will we live in peace.

Sadly, if many say they SIN not they lie to themselves.

We all have fallen short of the mark of a perfect life. The good news is, it need not be that way anymore.

There remains a day for us all to enter into the ease of rest. There remains for all of us a better way.

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭1‬ NIV)

And how do we enter this rest?

By ending our mess!

We need to live out lives without all the fear, anger, shame, worry and lies. We need to accept that everything that is happening to us is actually happening for us, to direct us back to LOVE!

The scriptures say LOVE is salvation. The scriptures express that the TRUTH sets us free.

In this we find life.

We all took upon ourselves the Sins of the World… And we all died (became ignorant) but here is the good news, we all WILL live again.

For just as SIN enters the world through one man and death, so too with the sacrifice of one man can mankind be saved from it all and rise again.

It is time to take responsibility people. It is time to LOVE and to really check yourself. For if in one area you fall, if you find yourself struggle, depressed, anxious, and angry with it all, then it is a good call that there is SIN in your life that needs to be dealt with.

We all need to take our thoughts captive and really focus our intention on the life we desire. We need to study to be silent for our words must be chosen wisely, as they create our world around us. We must die to SIN once and for all by no longer transgressing Gods law of Love and we will find paradise indeed.

Don’t let others fool you, you cannot be saved by another’s sacrifice, you are only saved when you choose to do the same yourself.

It’s time to pick up your cross and Live.

I hope this short entry opened your eyes to the things that are standing in the way of your promise land. I assure you if I didn’t begin practicing what I preach I would be a man most miserable indeed.

Thanks be to God I am not.
